"Designing and analyzing lessons with the TRU Math Framework"
Thursday - Friday, May 5 - 6, 2016
Prieto Math and Science Academy, 2231 N. Central Ave.
Registration deadline: 2016-04-26
This conference will feature live research lessons taught by a classroom teacher to his or her students, exploring how teaching math through problem solving can help students develop the Mathematical Practices of the Common Core State Standards. After each lesson, panelists and participants will engage in an in-depth discussion about the design of the lesson and its impact on students, with final comments by Dr. Schoenfeld, creator of the TRU Math Framework, and Dr. Akihiko Takahashi, an expert in Lesson Study and elementary mathematics.
Subject to change, the lessons will be:
"Teaching through Problem Solving"
Thursday - Friday, May 7-8, 2015
Prieto Math and Science Academy
Registration deadline: 2015-04-24
This conference will feature three research lessons exploring how teaching math through problem solving can help students develop the Mathematical Practices of the Common Core State Standards. Each lesson will be taught live to students, followed by an in-depth discussion about the impact of the lesson on students, with final comments by an expert in elementary mathematics.
Thursday - Friday, May 1-2, 2014
Prieto Math and Science Academy, 2231 N. Central, Chicago
Registration deadline: 2014-04-18
Teachers at Prieto Math and Science Academy have been using lesson study for several years to create a school-wide vision for teaching mathematics. This conference will feature research lessons in kindergarten and grade 4, focusing on helping students learn to give viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others (SMP 3), in lessons organized around problem solving (SMP 1).

"Using Level 3 teaching to cultivate the mathematical practices of the Common Core State Standards"
Thursday and Friday, May 3-4, 2012
Prieto Math and Science Academy, Chicago
Registration deadline: 2012-04-24
At the 2010 Chicago Lesson Study Conference, we presented the concept of Level 3 teaching, in which the teacher creates circumstances that lead students to discover important ideas for themselves. This kind of teaching naturally cultivates many of the mathematical practices called for in the Common Core State Standards. But what does that kind of teaching look like, and how can lesson study help teachers progress towards it?
This year's Chicago Lesson Study Conference will feature speakers and, of course, live research lessons to foster discussion among participants around the challenge of implementing the Mathematical Practices of the Common Core State Standards.
"Bringing the Common Core Standards to Life"
Thursday to Saturday, May 12 - 14, 2011
Newberry Math and Science Academy, 700 W. Willow, Chicago, IL
Registration deadline: 2011-04-29
The Common Core State Standards promise to bring focus and coherence to K-12 mathematics and English/Language Arts, but they are just marks on a page until teachers bring them to life in their classroom lessons. Come join educators from around the country to see how lesson study can be used to develop a common understanding of what the CCSS really mean in practice. There will be four live research lessons, one for high school mathematics, two for elementary mathematics, and one for 8th grade language arts, held concurrently with the high school math lesson.
